General Statement of Job
The Library Part-time Clerk is a twelve-month, classified staff position reporting to the Library Operations Specialist whose responsibilities include providing assistance at public services desks; sorts, shelves and issues and receives library materials.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
Answers inquiries of nonprofessional nature and refers persons requiring professional assistance to a librarian.
Answers and transfers phone calls.
Assists patrons in locating materials throughout the library.
Assists patrons in use of computers, copiers, printers, reader printers, and other equipment.
Communicates with the Library Director and Library Operations Specialist regarding building, patron, policy, scheduling and procedural issues.
Completes tasks as assigned by the Library Operations Specialist.
Displays strong customer service skills and the desire to work with students, faculty, staff, and members of the community.
Issues borrowers' library identifications, locates and checks out materials to patrons, inspects returned materials for damage, and computes, records, and receives overdue fines.
Processes and maintains reserve materials and interlibrary loans.
Processes SWAN/MOBIUS requests and/or deliveries as directed by the Library Operations Specialist.
Provides assistance, coverage and delivery of services on a rotating basis at each of the four public service desks.
Re-shelves materials in all library collections.
Reviews records to compile list of overdue books, and issues overdue notices to borrowers as directed by Library Operations Specialist.
Sorts mail, checks in newspapers as assigned.
Sorts returned materials according to classification code and need for repair, and returns them to shelves, files, or other designated storage area.
Supervises and directs workflow for student employees.
Updates computer records as requested.
Works a schedule that varies by semester and includes evenings and weekends.
Works on projects as assigned for library or departments within library.
Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licenses
High school diploma or G.E.D required.
Minimum of two years of college or technical school.
Solid computer and technology skills.
Strong customer service and supervisory skills.
Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
Neatness and attention to detail are required.
Demonstrate oral and written communication skills including the ability to read and interpret documents and speak effectively with a variety of people.
Ability to work independently without direct supervision and collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, community members, and librarians.
Commitment to learning about library operations, policies and procedures.
Preferred:
Supervisory experience.
Previous library experience.
Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System.
Knowledge of Sierra Integrated Library System.
